The London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) And What You Need To Know
The ULEZ is now in effect across central London.

Launched in April 2019 the London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) was launched to help improve air quality in the heart of the city and discourage drivers of the most polluting vehicles from using roads in central London introducing a charge for high- emission vehicles entering the particular zone - but this area covered by the ULEZ will increase later this year.

As with any city, London is struggling with air pollution, and it decided the only way to combat this was to set up the ULEZ as a way to deter high polluting vehicles by charging them a daily fee to enter a set area.

Back in 2019 the are originally covered the same area as London congestion charge zone and then in late 2021 it expanded to all inner London boroughs - Essenstially covers everywhere inside the north and south circular roads but however the north and south circular roads the selves wont be charged.

For larger vehicles however the situation has already changed with a London wide low emission zone that started a year earlier in October 2020.

The ULEZ charge operates 24 hours a day and runs from midnight to midnight so if you drive in at 11pm and out at 1 am you will need to pay 2 daily charges.

The charge for most vehicle types including cars motorcycles and vans (up to 3.5 tonnes) is £12.50. If you don't pay the charge the penalty is £160 or £80 if you pay within 14 days.

Vehicles that will be liable for the charge are those that do not meet particular Euro emissions standards. for petrol cars and vans they'll have to comply with the to the Euro 4 and for diesel cars and vans will have to comply with Euro 6. Motorcycles and mopeds will need to meet the Euro 3 standards.

ULEZ charge is different from the Congestion Charge and so drivers will need to pay both but if they don't have to pay the ULEZ charge they will still be required to pay the congestion charge.
